Artificial Tornado in German Museum to Save Lives

An artificial tornado in Germany's Mercedes-Benz Museum was recognized Monday by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's tallest man-made twister.

The air swirl, created by air jets in the multi-storey gallery of the remarkable spiral building, does no harm. In fact it was installed to save lives if fire ever breaks out.

Testers from Guinness, a British-based publisher, confirmed the museum's tornado was 34.43 metres high.

The 144 jets take seven minutes to get the 28 tons of air moving at top speed, creating a low-pressure column at the "eye" of the circulation to suck in smoke and carry it up to vents in the roof.

The purpose is to stop suffocating smoke spreading into exhibition areas if fire ever breaks out. Museum chief executive Michael Bock said the system was unique worldwide and was specially designed for the building.

Carbon dioxide vapor fed into the tornado to make it visible shows it as a twisting column about 40 centimeters wide.

U.S. plane forced to land after passenger lights match to hide flatulence

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Nashville after a passenger lit a match to disguise the scent of flatulence, authorities said Tuesday.

The Dallas-bound flight was diverted to Nashville on Monday after several passengers reported smelling burning sulfur from the matches, said Lynne Lowrance, spokeswoman for the Nashville International Airport Authority. All 99 passengers and five crew members were taken off and screened while the plane was searched and luggage was screened.

The FBI questioned a passenger who admitted she struck the matches in an attempt to conceal a "body odor," Lowrance said. She had an unspecified medical condition, authorities said.

"It's humorous in a way but you feel sorry for the individual, as well," she said.

"It's unusual that someone would go to those measures to cover it up."

The flight took off again but the woman was not allowed back on the plane. The woman, who was not identified, was not charged in the incident.

Dos and Don'ts of the Googlebot

Google Adsense relies on the googlebot spider to properly deliver relevant ads. So let's explorer this spider and found out how to better our sites through it. The thing that most webmasters don't realize is the googlebot is a lot smarter than most people think. It has been coded to fit the rising amount of spam websites out there. I've compiled a list fo things they like and things that may get your site dropped by Google which needless to say will leave your Google Adsense profits out of the loop. Let's start with the negatives as to what you shouldn't do:

First duplicate content is an immediate turn-off. They don't like it if 1000 websites all say the same thing. So think twice before using those articles from article websites.

Second the thing about nested tables these are the tables hidden behind tables. Which means you see an ordered content but it's really a lot of code. My advice stay away from nested tables, stick with normal tables.

Third the so called doorway pages which basically involves loading your webpage with keywords and then diverting visitors to another webpage. Again major no-no here.

Fourth these dynamic urls which change depend on inputted information. Too many of these will have the spider spend more time than necessary on your website, bringing your ranking down.

Fifth the HTML or PHP or whatever code it is needs to be kept to a minimum. More code than actual content is bad for your websites since the Googlebot just sees text.

Sixth which is a scam many use to get higher ranking, this only whoever works for a while then gets you completely drooped from Google, is keyword overloading. Putting nothing but keywords on a page will get you high the first time the bot searches your site but as time progresses it learns and you pay.

Seventh of course is self-promoting. Which is basically putting too many links to your homepage from your sub-pages. This sounds like it'll work for you but it doesn't as the Googlebot know enough to know which links are from which domain.

Eighth is having the same content on a page forever, one of the fundamental rules of a good webmaster is to keep your website fresh at all times.

Ninth is the new iframes these frames do nothing short of confusing the Googlebot as it indexes each frame as a different page ending your content in a disarray. Which is why Google Ads only respond to the iframe they are put in.

That's about it for the negatives. Focus on those and check to see that you don't use any of these methods, this will keep you in the neutral zone. But we want more we want to be able to go positive, to make sure the Googlebot leaves our website with enough info to satisfy Google Adsense and get you a good SEO ranking. So here is a list of the things to do in order to get ahead of the spider game:

First things first updated content is a must. If you can update your website daily. Ever wonder why blogs and forums do so well in search engines? Because their content is ever so changing. And not to mention original.

Second use a useful tool by Google called Google Sitemaps. It's a complete layout of your website that you tell Google so it already knows where to spider. Which makes the Googlebot's job so much easier. If you haven't already sign up for Google Sitemaps. It's free and easy.

Third keep your code clean of errors and keep it to a minimum. There a lot of tools out there that check you website code to make sure there no errors. Even if your content is automatic check jsut to make sure, machines aren't perfect.

Fourth make sure you have a lot of relevant backlinks with different titles. Your website shouldn't be "All About Google Adsense" all the time someone else can link to it under a different title. Like "Google Adsense Info Blog". This makes sure the Google Spider doesn't mistake your backlinks as linksfarm backlinks, which do more harm than good.

Fifth keep your keyword density normal about 3-7% should be good enough. Remember moderation in all things you don't wnat too much or too little.

Sixth make sure each of your images has an ALT tag this makes sure the Googlebot will understand what it stands for. Since it can only read text.

Seventh always keep you webpages static unless it's unavoidable. Too much generated content is bad for spiders.

If you follow all of these your website should be the most Googlebot friendly website out there. Making your Google Adsense ads stay relevant and giving you a higher Google PR. But make sure you keep up-to-date about new developments in the Google Spider field.

Fiber Optic Cable Breaks data transfer limit to 14 terabits per second

Fiber optic cable has become the Bonneville Salt Flats of the Internet, with universities, labs, and corporations vying for the fastest data transfer rate crown. Late last week, the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation laid claim to the speed throne with a 14 terabits per second transmission over a single 100-mile fiber optic line. That number easily surpassed the previous record of 10Tbps and demonstrates how far we've come in just three years, when we wrote about a 5.44Gbps transmission.

To put the transmission into perspective, 14Tbps is enough bandwidth to download 140 high-definition movies in a single second or deliver all of YouTube's daily traffic in under 15 seconds. It's also not likely to happen again in the near future outside of a lab or a single, dedicated line like this. However, NTT's experiment does offer some hope for increased broadband speeds, even if they fall short of the stratospheric heights seen in its demonstration.

Although much of NTT's network consists of fiber with a 1Tbps capacity, the company says that it is rapidly approaching capacity due to the increased popularity of broadband. NTT's experiment was noteworthy in that it offers hope for increasing capacity on current fiber networks by more efficiently using the available spectrum and some clever use of amplifiers.

While broadband users in Japan and South Korea enjoy 1Gbps connections, the fiber upgrade is just getting started in the US. Even when the fiber does make it to US homes, speeds top out at 50Mbps down and 5Mbps up in the case of Verizon's new FiOS network. While significantly faster than current offerings, Verizon is limited by the need to reserve significant bandwidth for its TV programming. AT&T customers aren't so fortunate, as the company's decision to run fiber to the node—instead of to the home—means that they will be limited to 6Mbps.

More efficient use of current fiber networks is possible, as NTT's experiement demonstrates, but being able to download even a single HD movie in the blink of an eye is still a ways off.

10 questions and answers that everyone has asked and probably wants to know

Foreword: If there is one thing I've learned in 28 years on this planet is that I really don't know much but what I have learned is that amongst all the questions and answers in life, sometimes the simplest explanation tends to be the right one. I have prepared the following list of 10 questions that I am sure everyone has asked at one point or another in life with my honest opinions, not based on personal opinion but based on a real life viewpoint of the situation. Who knows, they may be wrong or right but this is what I believe to be true.

If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?
No. What we know to be sound is a result of sound waves. These waves travel through air, bouncing off of particles until they reach a destination that can interpret them into sound. If there is nothing around to interpret them, the sound waves eventually just become so faint until they die out. Naturally however, logic would dictate that it would be unlikely that a tree would fall and not even a single animal or creature would be around but assuming that is the case, then no, if nothing is around to interpret the sound, then the falling tree doesn't make a sound.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
That depends on what you believe in. If you believe that Darwinism is right, then the egg came first. The idea being that all creatures that exist today are the result from historic ancestors that evolved into what we know today. That being the case, something existed before the chicken, which laid an egg and voila, you had a new species which we call a chicken today. If however, you believe in religion, than whatever God you believe in placed that chicken on this earth and voila, the chicken came first.

Did the government know about 9/11?
Yes. For whatever the specific reason was, the governments a long time ago decided that there were certain things that people were not to be privy to. Call it public interest or a service to the people but that is what it is. It would be impossible to believe that certain parts of government didn't know about September 11 and if not, that should be the biggest fear of all. Please keep in mind that in order to carry out such of an event, you attract attention and our government, love them or hate them, does keep tabs on those events. The question of course is, how much did they know and was there any involvement.

Will someone beat out Microsoft?
Yes. As of today, Microsoft has a market cap of $268 Billion. People tend to find it hard to believe that someone can get bigger. People tend to forget, there was a day before Microsoft existed and at that point, the front runner was never thought to have been beatable, but they clearly were. Microsoft made its success by not only making money but allowing others to do the same. The trick to making Microsoft-type money is to find a way to make it possible to have as many people on earth contribute to your wealth and by doing that, you contribute to their well being. In the next 25 to 50 years, someone will beat out Microsoft and they will be the one company people least expect because that's who Microsoft was, a nobody who changed the way we compute.

Will someone ever offer a better search engine than Google?
Yes. Everything in terms of technology has a beginning and everything with a beginning has an end. Google came out with two individuals, taking on billion dollar companies. People find it hard to believe that but the reality is that with all their money and all their power and smarts, someone will come out with something new, whether it be in the next year or the next 5 years and compete with them and it will be someone who would rather make it happen than sell out to Google at any price. Just think of all the investment opportunities Google does get and passes on, one of them is gong to be the next Google. Keep in mind, when Google started, they had $1MM in debt and nothing to show for themselves but a great service, this was at a point where they took on a multi-billion dollar industry and where are they today?

Is there a God?
Yes. Over 98% of the world’s population believes in a "God" in one form or another. Although, when you think about it, that same number at one point believed the earth was flat. There is a God, it would be naive to believe that what we know as existence today just "happened" but whatever "God" really is, it's nothing we know, understand or expect. A force created what we know to be existence and it would be foolish of us to believe that a force so grand and powerful would be something we can comprehend.

Why does hate exist?
Fear. Trust and the need for human association is one of the most basic forms of human emotion that exist, however, most psychologists will tell you that the most powerful human emotion is fear. It's the one that can kill you, consume you and even drive you crazy. Next time you wonder why someone hates someone else, just ask where the underlying fear is.

What is love?
It's a human emotion that triggers the second largest number of endorphins in the human brain, right behind fear. Sometimes it's triggered by circumstance, sometimes by lust and sometimes just by simple dumb luck. There is an old saying, a fish and a bird can fall in love but where would they make a home? Fact is, people interpret love in as many ways as people care to admit because it's just that, an emotion that means something different to everyone it affects but that's what it is, an emotional response to a situation based on circumstance which is often why people find themselves falling in and out of love, because the circumstance changes. If you are one of the fortunate few in life who manages to find love, someone that helps trigger those emotions, hold on to that as long as you can because of all the things one could ever hope for in life, it's that someone like that exists for them.

Is there life on other planets?
Yes. Will we see it in our lifetime? Maybe, maybe not. Fact is, people often confuse human life with life and any concerns as to whether life does not exist is a matter of fear. After all, the possibility exists that whatever life is there, is it intelligent and more so, is it friendly? If it's anything like earth is today, they would be faced with their own fears and their own concerns. If you have any doubts whether life exist on other planets, just drive out to the open country, away from all the lights, all the sky noise and look up, ask yourself, amongst those billions of stars up there, surrounded by any number of planets, is it really possible that not one of them has the potential to yield life in one form or another? If you want to know how many possibilities that is, just take this example, imagine every speck of sand on the planet earth and multiply that by every other speck of sand on earth, that's the number of possibilities---still think we are it?

What's the meaning of life?
Plain and simple, it's what you make of it. Life today is a culmination of 10,000 years of civilized thought and the directions we go in are based on market rule. Whether it be the death penalty, abortion, war, freedom or anything good or bad, those things didn't just happen. People tend to believe that one person can't make a difference but they are confusing one person responsible for changing things on their own or setting the stage for a direction. If you have any doubts just think of Jesus, George Washington, Hitler and Napoleon, each one of them only one person and they themselves did not do everything to create the change, but they set the stage. So, good or evil, greatness or infamy, the life we have today is what we make of it. So don’t worry about the meaning, instead work on defining it yourself.

So my first piece of advice to you, dear would-be Earth-destroyer, is: do not think this will be easy.

Mission statement

By any means necessary, to render the Earth into a form in which it may no longer be considered a planet. Such forms include, but are most definitely not limited to: two or more planets; any number of smaller asteroids; a quantum singularity; a dust cloud.

To make the list, a method must actually work. That is, according to current scientific understanding, it must be possible for the Earth to actually be destroyed by this method, however improbable or impractical it may be.

Methods are ranked in order of feasibility, with the least likely listed first and the most likely being No. 10.

What this guide is not

This is not a guide for those whose aim is merely to wipe out humanity. I can in no way guarantee the complete extinction of the human race via any of these methods, real or imaginary. Humanity is wily and resourceful, and many of the methods outlined inside will take many years to even become available, let alone implement, by which time mankind may well have spread to other planets; indeed, other star systems.

If total human genocide is your ultimate goal, you are reading the wrong document. There are far more efficient ways of doing this, many which are available and feasible right now. Nor is this a guide for those wanting to annihilate everything from single-celled life upwards, render Earth uninhabitable or simply conquer it. These are trivial goals in comparison.

This is a guide for those who do not want the Earth to be there anymore

Method #1

Current feasibility rating: 0/10

You will need: nothing

Method: No method. Simply sit back and twiddle your thumbs as, completely by chance, all 200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms making up the planet Earth suddenly, simultaneously and spontaneously cease to exist. Note: the odds against this actually ever occurring are considerably greater than a googolplex to one. Failing this, some kind of arcane (read: scientifically laughable) probability-manipulation device may be employed.

Utter, utter rubbish.

Method #2

Feasibility rating: 1/10

You will need: a stable strangelet

Method: Hijack control of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York. Use the RHIC to create and maintain a stable strangelet. Keep it stable for as long as it takes to absorb the entire Earth into a mass of strange quarks. Keeping the strangelet stable is incredibly difficult once it has absorbed the stabilizing machinery, but creative solutions may be possible.

A while back, there was some media hoo-hah about the possibility of this actually happening at the RHIC, but in actuality the chances of a stable strangelet forming are pretty much zero.

Earth's final resting place: a huge glob of strange matter.

Method #3

Feasibility rating: 2/10

You will need: a microscopic black hole. Note that black holes are not eternal, they evaporate due to Hawking radiation. For your average black hole this takes an unimaginable amount of time, but for really small ones it could happen almost instantaneously, as evaporation time is dependent on mass. Therefore you microscopic black hole must have greater than a certain threshold mass, roughly equal to the mass of Mount Everest. Creating a microscopic black hole is tricky, since one needs a reasonable amount of neutronium, but may possibly be achievable by jamming large numbers of atomic nuclei together until they stick. This is left as an exercise to the reader.

Method: simply place your black hole on the surface of the Earth and wait. Black holes are of such high density that they pass through ordinary matter like a stone through the air. The black hole will plummet through the ground, eating its way to the center of the Earth and all the way through to the other side: then, it'll oscillate back, over and over like a matter-absorbing pendulum. Eventually it will come to rest at the core, having absorbed enough matter to slow it down. Then you just need to wait, while it sits and consumes matter until the whole Earth is gone.

Highly, highly unlikely. But not impossible.

Earth's final resting place: a singularity of almost zero size, which will then proceed to happily orbit the Sun as normal.

Method #4

Feasibility rating: 5/10

You will need: 2,500,000,000,000 tons of antimatter

Antimatter - the most explosive substance possible - can be manufactured in small quantities using any large particle accelerator, but this will take some considerable time to produce the required amounts. If you can create the appropriate machinery, it may be possible - and much easier - simply to "flip" 2.5 trillion tons of matter through a fourth dimension, turning it all to antimatter at once.

Method: This method involves detonating a bomb so big that it blasts the Earth to pieces.

How hard is that?

The gravitational binding energy of a planet of mass M and radius R is - if you do the lengthy calculations - given by the formula E=(3/5)GM^2/R. For Earth, that works out to roughly 224,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Joules. The Sun takes nearly a WEEK to output that much energy. Think about THAT.

To liberate that much energy requires the complete annihilation of around 2,500,000,000,000 tonnes of antimatter. That's assuming zero energy loss to heat and radiation, which is unlikely to be the case in reality: You'll probably need to up the dose by at least a factor of ten. Once you've generated your antimatter, probably in space, just launch it en masse towards Earth. The resulting release of energy (obeying Einstein's famous mass-energy equation, E=mc^2) should be sufficient to split the Earth into a thousand pieces.

Earth's final resting place: A second asteroid belt around the Sun.

Earliest feasible completion date: AD 2500. Of course, if it does prove possible to manufacture antimatter in the sufficiently large quantities you require - which is not necessarily the case - then smaller antimatter bombs will be around long before then.

Method #5

Feasibility rating: 5/10

You will need: a light bulb

Method: This is a fun one. Contemporary scientific theories tell us that what we may see as vacuum is only vacuum on average, and actually thriving with vast amounts of particles and antiparticles constantly appearing and then annihilating each other. It also suggests that the volume of space enclosed by a light bulb contains enough vacuum energy to boil every ocean in the world. Therefore, vacuum energy could prove to be the most abundant energy source of any kind. Which is where you come in. All you need to do is figure out how to extract this energy and harness it in some kind of power plant - this can easily be done without arousing too much suspicion - then surreptitiously allow the reaction to run out of control. The resulting release of energy would easily be enough to annihilate all of planet Earth and probably the Sun too.

Slightly possible.

Earth's final resting place: a rapidly expanding cloud of particles of varying size.

Earliest feasible completion date: 2060 or so.

Method #6

Feasibility rating: 6/10

You will need: a black hole, extremely powerful rocket engines, and, optionally, a large rocky planetary body. The nearest black hole to our planet is 1600 light years from Earth in the direction of Sagittarius, orbiting V4641.

Method: after locating your black hole, you need get it and the Earth together. This is likely to be the most time-consuming part of this plan. There are two methods, moving Earth or moving the black hole, though for best results you'd most likely move both at once.

Very difficult, but definitely possible.

Earliest feasible completion date: I do not expect the necessary technology to be available until AD 3000, and add at least 800 years for travel time. (That's in an external observer's frame of reference and assuming you move both the Earth and the black hole at the same time.)

Method #7

Feasibility rating: 6/10

You will need: a powerful mass driver, or ideally lots of them; ready access to roughly 2*10^32J

Method: Basically, what we're going to do here is dig up the Earth, a big chunk at a time, and boost the whole lot of it into orbit. Yes. All six sextillion tons of it. A mass driver is a sort of oversized electromagnetic railgun, which was once proposed as a way of getting mined materials back from the Moon to Earth - basically, you just load it into the driver and fire it upwards in roughly the right direction. We'd use a particularly powerful model - big enough to hit escape velocity of 11 kilometers per second even after atmospheric considerations - and launch it all into the Sun or randomly into space.

Alternate methods for boosting the material into space include loading the extracted material into space shuttles or taking it up via space elevator. All these methods, however, require a - let me emphasize this - titanic quantity of energy to carry out. Building a Dyson sphere ain't gonna cut it here. (Note: Actually, it would. But if you have the technology to build a Dyson sphere, why are you reading this?) See No. 6 for a possible solution.

If we wanted to and were willing to devote resources to it, we could start this process RIGHT NOW. Indeed, what with all the gunk left in orbit, on the Moon and heading out into space, we already have done.

Earth's final resting place: Many tiny pieces, some dropped into the Sun, the remainder scattered across the rest of the Solar System.

Earliest feasible completion date: Ah. Yes. At a billion tons of mass driven out of the Earth's gravity well per second: 189,000,000 years.

Method #8

Feasibility rating: 7/10.

You will need: a big heavy rock, something with a bit of a swing to it... perhaps Mars

Method: Essentially, anything can be destroyed if you hit it hard enough. ANYTHING. The concept is simple: find a really, really big asteroid or planet, accelerate it up to some dazzling speed, and smash it into Earth, preferably head-on but whatever you can manage. The result: an absolutely spectacular collision, resulting hopefully in Earth (and, most likely, our "cue ball" too) being pulverized out of existence - smashed into any number of large pieces which if the collision is hard enough should have enough energy to overcome their mutual gravity and drift away forever, never to coagulate back into a planet again.

A brief analysis of the size of the object required can be found here. Falling at the minimal impact velocity of 11 kilometers per second and assuming zero energy loss to heat and other energy forms, the cue ball would have to have roughly 60% of the mass of the Earth. Mars, the next planet out, "weighs" in at about 11% of Earth's mass, while Venus, the next planet in and also the nearest to Earth, has about 81%. Assuming that we would fire our cue ball into Earth at much greater than 11km/s (I'm thinking more like 50km/s), either of these would make great possibilities.

Obviously a smaller rock would do the job, you just need to fire it faster. A 10,000,000,000,000-tonne asteroid at 90% of light speed would do just as well. See the Guide to moving Earth for useful information on maneuvering big hunks of rock across interplanetary distances.

Pretty plausible.

Method #9

Feasibility rating: 8/10

You will need: a single von Neumann machine

Method: A von Neumann machine is any device that is capable of creating an exact copy of itself given nothing but the necessary raw materials. Create one of these that subsists almost entirely on iron, magnesium, aluminum and silicon, the major elements found in Earth's mantle and core. It doesn't matter how big it is as long as it can reproduce itself exactly in any period of time. Release it into the ground under the Earth's crust and allow it to fend for itself. Watch and wait as it creates a second von Neumann machine, then they create two more, then they create four more. As the population of machines doubles repeatedly, the planet Earth will, terrifyingly soon, be entirely eaten up and turned into a swarm of potentially sextillions of machines. Technically your objective would now be complete - no more Earth - but if you want to be thorough then you can command your VNMs to hurl themselves, along with any remaining trace elements, into the Sun. This hurling would have to be achieved using rocket propulsion of some sort, so be sure to include this in your design.

So crazy it might just work.

Method #10

Feasibility rating: 9/10

You will need: Earthmoving equipment

Method: Hurl the Earth into the Sun. Sending Earth on a collision course with the Sun is not as easy as one might think; even though you don't actually have to literally hit the Sun (send the Earth near enough to the Sun (within the Roche limit), and tidal forces will tear it apart), it's surprisingly easy to end up with Earth in a loopy elliptical orbit which merely roasts it for four months in every eight. But careful planning can avoid this.

This is impossible at our current technological level, but will be possible one day, I'm certain. In the meantime, may happen by freak accident if something comes out of nowhere and randomly knocks Earth in precisely the right direction. Earth's final resting place: a small globule of vaporized iron sinking slowly into the heart of the Sun.

Earliest feasible completion date: Via act of God: 25 years' time. Any earlier and we'd have already spotted the asteroid in question. Via human intervention: given the current level of expansion of space technology, 2250 at best.

WHEN I WAS VERY SMALL, my dad could always tell when I was lying. When I was about six years old, he told me God whispered it to him. Even though the guy never went to church or seemed particularly religious, I had to respect that. He had an in with God. I wanted to hear it. I figured if I knew when it happened, the precise moment, I'd hear the voice of God, too.

I decided to watch my dad's eyes for a sign — some twitch of recognition, some little break in his concentration, anything — that would tell me when he was hearing the voice of God. I told him easy lies, the ones I always told him: that my brother did it, or that my neighbor, a little asshole named Charlie Iker, made me do it — broke the vase, left the gate unlatched, cracked the storm window. At first I didn't even want to blink, for fear I'd miss the moment when God spoke. But the truth is, I got nothing. No sign. Bubkes. In fact, the more I looked at his eyes, the more I began to realize that my dad had no idea that I was lying. None. He looked straight back at me, waiting to hear the next thing I would tell him. In fact, he was hanging on my words. There was no voice of God. My father wasn't listening to anyone but me. He had no idea when I was lying, especially if I stared him down the whole time.

The trick, I soon realized, was simply to look him in the eye as I spoke. So it was that I became an atheist and a proficient liar in one fell swoop. Such were my salad days.

A PERSON'S GAZE has weight, resistance, muscularity. Clearly, there are people who use their eyes well. You know them: the sales rep, the fundraiser, the tyrannical supervisor. Their eyes force the question. These people may be as dumb as streetlamps, but they are an undeniable presence in the room. They know they must be dealt with. You know it, too.

It is a very particular skill set. The eye-contact specialist is like the one guy in the game of pickup basketball who knows only how to box out for a rebound. Relentless and a little annoying, he uses his skill, presses his opponents with the fundamentals. It may not work every trip down the court, but eventually things bounce his way. Over time, this habit — establishing and maintaining eye contact — creates favorable situations and produces results. The eye-contact specialist gets talked to first, dealt with most promptly, and responded to most thoroughly. He's always first in line for a reason.

And for the one who's being looked at, eye contact sends a message, signaling acknowledgment, connection, and attention, signaling something, I suppose, like empathy. Being seen is, on some level, being felt. It's nice to be acknowledged. Even so, why does eye contact, wielded freely, always feel like a weapon to me? Why do I want to smack people who stare at me deeply while I'm talking about mixed drinks or V-6 engines, about the names of banks or the price of a gallon of gasoline? Maybe the true signal is less subtle, less friendly than "I'm paying attention to you." Whether he admits it or not, that person is participating in one very large bet that you will blink first. That guy, the one who's looking at you — straight at you, right into you — is getting something that you are not. It's called the upper hand.

Well, that's my preferred hand. So I did my thing. For four weeks I tried to use eye contact to get what I wanted, with real abandon. It was no small trick. By nature, my eyes drift. I tend to look past people when I talk. I look out the window, examine the horizon. I'm sure this has cost me connection with some people who take it as a sign of being evasive or shifty. When I paid attention to it, I found that my tendency was to click in, lock eyes for a second or less, then look upward or outward into the distance. It's just not my rhythm to stare.

That was the first lesson: Eye contact is not the same as staring.

People don't like the dumb indifference of a stare. My first attempts at maintaining eye contact were so self-conscious that I took to picking a point on the person's face — as close to the eyes as possible — and gazing at it as calmly as possible. That was a disaster. I wasn't looking at people so much as I was at a blemish they happened to know very well.

If I stared at a point, say, between someone's eyes or at a mole just above an eyebrow, people knew it right away. I did this at a Smoothie King at the airport, and the girl behind the counter stood it for about seven seconds before she asked me, "What are you looking at?" She ran her finger along her eyebrow. She scooped my immune booster in a tizzy.

So I tried to concentrate on eyelashes, but this made my own eyes jump as I talked. My head bobbed, too, and I was hit with a sense of motion sickness. Women constantly excused themselves after talking to me to check their faces in the mirror. I was forced to apologize, telling them that I was just spacing out, not paying attention — the direct opposite of what I was hoping to convey in the first place. It was as if I had become a mirror in which people saw their own tiny imperfections, magnified by my glance.

Both parties in a conversation are caught almost constantly in the true focus and precise direction of a glance. I had to go for the eyes. There is no faking it.

THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN people in my life who were good at using their eyes. My tenth-grade English teacher. My shift boss at a Mexican restaurant back in 1986. My friend the newspaper reporter. My accountant. My girlfriend. I don't know if I trusted each of these people because they looked straight at me or if they looked straight at me because I trusted them. Yet each could lock and hold my glance for minutes at a time, while I was feeling sick after fifteen seconds. What exactly did they see? How did they do it?

It was clear that the idea of eye contact is not simply to point your eyes in a given direction. You have to use your eyes. I had to have a move. I sucked it up and started to lock in on the pupils. It took some doing, but I found I could make my- self relax and hold the glance if I simply stopped working to figure out what the other person was thinking. I had to force myself to stop reading every twitch, every sideways glance, every brush of the hair. I had to stop treating the world like a poker game, in which every movement might be a tell. When I walked in the door, when I stuck out my hand, when I said "How are you?" I turned my gaze toward the pupil of the person's eye. It really was a process of searching it out, looking at the black of the eye only, holding my glance there, and waiting until the eye color registered in my periphery.

It worked, too. Women held my glance longer; men moved faster. This worked with waitresses. With clerks at hotel desks. It worked with bartenders. Even with cabdrivers, whom I looked at in their rearview mirrors. I began to gain better control over these transactions by searching out their eyes. It took only a few seconds, but I could plainly see what they were looking for. Here is what I saw: No matter how much attention they appeared to be giving me, no matter how slowly they spoke or how long they paused after greeting me, it was evident that these people were initially treating me like every other schmoe who walked in off the street — trying to figure me out and see how fast they could get me what I wanted before moving on.

The eye contact changed all that. I'd compare it to using a Sawzall for the first time, that moment you realize you could cut through pretty much any wall in the world if you had the right blade. With my eyes, I calmed them, slowed them down, and did so without knocking them over or humiliating them. I used my eyes to upset the speed and indifference of their routines and simply register my presence by asking them to do a double take. It worked every time. They didn't know me, but then, suddenly, it seemed they did. I thought of it as a kind of dominance, holding them in the kind of invisible grip you might have once seen employed by a villain in a DC comic. I got discounts I didn't deserve, a room facing the water. I was warned off the calamari and onto the crab cake. The desk clerk perked up when I arrived at the hotel and stood up straighter when I checked out.

I tried it with people who knew me well, too, people who see me all the time. The Indian guy at the local gas station. The woman I've worked with for seven years. A guy I play cards with on weekends. In each case, upon greeting them, I'd search out their pupils and hold my eyes on theirs for a minimum of three beats. Just as with people I didn't know, time seemed to slow down and routine moments became unpredictable. Not just because three beats is an eternity when you have nothing to say except "What's happening?" but because it meant they had to look at me at least once, and often two or three times, before they spoke.

While I may suck at eye contact naturally, there are people who are worse, much worse, in every ring of my life. The more I practiced, the more hapless they seemed. It's the law of dominance, I think, that the more dominant you become, the more you want to stay dominant. I found I liked backing people down. I began to look at them long enough that I began to sense when they were about to look away. The truth is, instead of them seeing me, it ended up that I could really see them. They were just like I was, a little afraid of eye contact, a little leery of connection. I meant well, so I pressed on. People gave me apologies I didn't ask for. They invited me to lunch.

Sometimes I pushed it too far. The gas-station guy, so used to staring out his windows at the world passing by, was alarmed by my glance after four beats. "Yes?" he said. "Yes?" And I held my gaze, because I had nothing to lose. He reached under the counter, and I thought for a moment that he was pulling out a gun. But he pulled out a pack of Marlboro Reds. "Here," he said. "Take one. You may have one, of course."

I took one, too, just for good measure. It seemed a small sort of bullying. I could do far worse with my eyes. Anyone can. The tool can always become the weapon.

WITH ANY GESTURE of influence, the danger lies in not knowing what you are after. I fell into an easy routine after several weeks of making eye contact. One afternoon, while negotiating the price of an antique gold watch I was buying for my son's birthday, I was staring into the eyes of a jeweler, trying to figure out what color his eyes were, when he suddenly dropped the price by $75, to $200. I'd been threatening him somehow and hadn't known it. I didn't break away. I didn't look down. While I hadn't expected as much, now I had to see where I could go from there.

His eyes jumped back and forth, from the counter to the watch to me, then back again, in reverse. His eyes were green, I decided. Green.

"Two hundred," I said. "Flat price. No tax, right?"

He nodded and looked back at me then, long and hard. We were in agreement, though neither of us said a thing.

"I never have quite figured out why the sexual urges of men and women differ so much. And I never have figured out the whole Venus and Mars thing. And I never figured out why men think with their head and women think with their heart. And I never yet have figured out how the sexual desire gene gets thrown into a state of turmoil when it hears the words "I do."
One evening last week, my wife and I were getting into bed. Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says, "I don't feel like it. I just want you to hold me." I said, "WHAT???"
So she says the words that I and every husband on the planet dread. She explains that I must not be in tune with her emotional needs as a woman. I'm thinking, "What was her first clue?" I finally realize that nothing was going to happen that night, so I went to sleep.
The very next day, we went shopping at a big, unnamed department store. I walked around with her while she tried on three different, very expensive outfits. She could not decide which one to take, so I told her to take all three of them. She then tells me that she wants matching shoes worth $200.00 a pair to which I say OK. And then we go to the jewellery department where she gets a pair of diamond earrings.
Let me tell you. She was so excited. She must have thought that I was one wave short of a shipwreck, but I don't think she cared. I think she was testing me when she asked for a tennis bracelet because she does not even play tennis. I think I threw her for a loop when I told her that it was OK. She was almost sexually excited from all of this, and you should have seen her face when she said, "I'm ready to go to the cash register."
I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, "No, honey, I don't feel like buying all this stuff now." You should have seen her face. It went completely blank. I then said, "Really, honey, I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while."
And just when she had this look like she was going to kill me, I added, "You must not be in tune with my financial needs as a man."
I figure that I won't be having sex again until some time after the Spring of 2008 but godammit it was worth it."

Traditional media ignore or downplay significant events

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- The San Francisco Bay Guardian newspaper has printed a list of stories we in the media seem to have largely ignored over the past year. The story is gleaned from an annual list developed by Project Censored, a media research group out of Sonoma State University that tracks the news published in independent journals and newsletters.

It's a provocative and eye-opening list that warrants attention, especially from the media. And each year it usually gets it, as Salon comments, out of "guilt."
In a great example of how certain stories play out, San Francisco Bay Guardian reporter Sarah Phelan opens her article by citing the play two news items recently received on the same day they broke: In Detroit, U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruled that the Bush administration's warrantless National Security Agency surveillance program was unconstitutional and must end. Meanwhile, somewhere in Thailand, a weirdo named John Mark Karr claimed he was with six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey when she died in 1996.
We all know which story received the most attention.
Here are the Top 10 most ignored stories. I've had to condense them for space considerations, but their headlines should tell enough of a story:

1. The Feds and the media muddy the debate over Internet freedom

The Supreme Court ruled that giant cable companies aren't required to share their wires with other Internet service providers. The issue was misleadingly framed as an argument over regulation, when it's really a case of the Federal Communications Commission and Congress talking about giving cable and telephone companies the freedom to control supply and content -- a decision that could have them playing favorites and forcing consumers to pay to get information and services that currently are free.

2. Halliburton charged with selling nuclear technology to Iran

Halliburton, the notorious U.S. energy company, sold key nuclear-reactor components to a private Iranian oil company called Oriental Oil Kish as recently as 2005, using offshore subsidiaries to circumvent U.S. sanctions. The story is particularly juicy because Vice President Dick Cheney, who now claims to want to stop Iran from getting nukes, was president of Halliburton in the mid-1990s, at which time he may have advocated business dealings with Iran, in violation of U.S. law.

3. World oceans in extreme danger

Governments deny global warming is happening as they rush to map the ocean floor in the hopes of claiming rights to oil, gas, gold, diamonds, copper, zinc and the planet's last pristine fishing grounds. Researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2005 found "the first clear evidence that the world ocean is growing warmer," including the discovery "that the top half-mile of the ocean has warmed dramatically in the past 40 years as the result of human-induced greenhouse gases."

4. Hunger and homelessness increasing in the United States

As hunger and homelessness rise in the United States, the Bush administration plans to get rid of a data source that supports this embarrassing reality, a survey that's been used to improve state and federal programs for retired and low-income Americans.
In 2003, the Bush Administration tried to whack the Bureau of Labor Statistics report on mass layoffs and in 2004 and 2005 attempted to drop the bureau's questions on the hiring and firing of women from its employment data.

5. High-tech genocide in Congo

If you believe the corporate media, then the ongoing genocide in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is all just a case of ugly tribal warfare. But that is a superficial, simplistic explanation that fails to connect this terrible suffering with the immense fortunes that stand to be made from manufacturing cell phones, laptop computers and other high-tech equipment.
What's really at stake in this bloodbath is control of natural resources such as diamonds, tin, and copper, as well as cobalt -- which is essential for the nuclear, chemical, aerospace, and defense industries -- and coltan and niobium, which is most important for the high-tech industries.

Of the 44 death reports released under ACLU's FOIA request, 21 were homicides and eight appear to have been the result of these abusive torture techniques.

9. World Bank funds Israel-Palestine wall

In 2004, the International Court of Justice ruled that the wall Israel is building deep into Palestinian territory should be torn down. Instead, construction of this cement barrier, which annexes Israeli settlements and breaks the continuity of Palestinian territory, has accelerated. In the interim, the World Bank has come up with a framework for a Middle Eastern Free Trade Area, which would be financed by the World Bank and built on Palestinian land around the wall to encourage export-oriented economic development.
But with Israel ineligible for World Bank loans, the plan seems to translate into Palestinians paying for the modernization of checkpoints around a wall that they've always opposed, a wall that will help lock in and exploit their labor.

How to make French Toast for two

Prep time: about 15 minutes

Ingredients:

* 1 egg
* 1/4 c. milk
* dash of vanilla extract
* 1 tbsp. margarine
* 2 pieces of bread

Utensils:

* medium-size bowl
* mixing spoon
* frying pan
* stove (You'll need help from your adult assistant.)
* spatula
* serving plate
* measuring cups and spoons

Directions:

1. Crack the egg into a medium-size bowl and beat well. Then mix in the milk and vanilla extract.
2. Put the margarine in a frying pan. Heat the pan on the stovetop on medium heat. It's hot enough when the margarine starts to bubble.
3. Dunk each piece of bread in the egg mixture. Make sure the bread is totally covered.
4. Cook the bread in the frying pan on low heat until the underside is light brown (about 5 minutes).
5. Use a spatula to flip the bread over, and cook again for another 5 minutes.
6. Use the spatula to transfer the French toast to a plate.

Then set it up

HijackThis downloads as a ZIP file that contains only the program itself, not an installer. When you unzip it, be sure to create a folder for the program to live in, such as C:\Program Files\HijackThis\, or it will simply unzip to your default downloads folder. To make running it even easier, you can right-click its program icon to create a shortcut on your desktop. Most versions of Windows let you drag the folder--or just the icon--to the Start menu and drop it where you want. Windows XP lets you right-click the icon and "pin" it to the Start menu. If you use the Quick Start toolbar, you can drag and drop the icon there.

Scan your system

Regardless of how you launch the program, running HijackThis can be confusing. All you do is click the Scan button to bring up a list of all the questionable entries in your registry and on your computer. However, even a completely healthy computer that's been customized by, say, setting a new Internet Explorer home page can have dozens of entries. A scan on our test machine resulted in 44 entries, all of which we recognized as benign. (If you'd like more information on why the program flagged a benign entry, you can either select an individual check box and hit the Info on Selected Item button or consult the publisher's excellent log tutorial.) The best thing to do is save the log, preferably in the HijackThis folder, and look to the Internet for answers.

Conveniently, after the program scans, the Scan button turns into the Save Log button. Once you press that, the log opens up in Notepad. At that point, the brave or foolhardy can look up entries on the Web to see whether they're benign. For example, we discovered that lsass.exe is a Mcft Windows process that helps authenticate user logins. Clearly this isn't something we want to delete, whereas the innocent-sounding rundll16.exe comes with the adware program BrowserAid.

However, you don't have to face the cleanup alone. Many anti-adware and tech-support online forums feature dedicated and smart people who will examine your HijackThis log file and tell you which entries to delete. Here's the way i speed up my internet connection.

First, i want to say that's this is only optimazion of your connection, i mean when your connection is 56k, please don't expect you get a cable speed alike. At least this will optimize your connection.

Clean up your PC:

1. Use new updated AV and Anti-Spyware to clean Virus, Malware, Adware, especially Spyware coz Spyware kill your speed.

Go to Control Panel -> Phone & Modem Options, click the Modem tab, select your Modem and click (please check out the port/xCOM that used by your modem) Properties.

Port Speed: 115200 (or highest that available)
Compression: Enabled
Flow Control: Hardware.

PORT SETTING

Go to Control Panel -> System > Hardware > Device Manager > Ports > COMx*(your modem COM) > Port Settings
> Bits per Second (9600)
Change 9600 to 115200 (this one you should use 115200, coz more than that is useless)
> Flow Control (None) ===> Change it to HARDWARE.

ISP SETTING

Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections, select your ISP and hit Alt+Enter.
Click Configure and set Maximum Speed to its highest setting (921600), and then check all thecheckboxes, except Enable Modem Compression, Enable Modem Speaker and Show Terminal Window.

Click Okay, select the Networking tab and click Settings.

Here, make sure Enable software compression is enabled.

Now click the OK button, and in the Network Components section, uninstall QoS if it is there and make sure only TCP/IP is checked. (if you don't use it, this could help increasing your security too)

Select it and click Properties, use DNS servers if your ISP has given you specific ones, otherwise leave it on automatic.

Click the Advanced button and make sure that IP Header Compression is disabled (it's not really important to keep your IP Header beeing compressed, so disable it).
Next up, click the WINS tab and choose Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
Now click OK and close any other windows, confirming the changes you've made.

REGISTRY(for XP and 2000 only)

warn: this could mess up sometimes, i suggest you not to do it, but still if you wanna try this one, please back up your registry first and don't forget to put extension .reg when you back up it and place it somewhere that you will never forget.
Setting:

1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Serv ices\AFD\Parameters
Add "BufferMultiplier" parameter and give it a value 400 hexidecimal (which will change into 1024).

5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\PriorityControl (if PriorityControl is not there, make the value) - on the right hand side right click and select new DWORD value, name it IrqXPriority (X = Irq assigned to your modem), then right click it and select modify and give it a decimal value of 1.

FINETUNING

Ok..this thing is a little bit complicated. I will give you the basic of the Theory, but you must do your own test. This is because everybody got different speed/bandwith.
For this purpose, i suggest you use Cablenut to make a change or you can do that by change it manually in the registry.

1. MTU

The very first thing you must do is to find out what the MTU is for your connection. To do this follow these simple steps:
a) Open a Command Prompt or MS-DOS window. (Start > Run > "cmd.exe")
Choose a server to ping. For example, you could use funender.com, however it is best to use your ISP. Then use the following command to ping that server:
ping aol.com -f -l 1472 (sometime it work by ping -f -l 1472 aol.com)
If you get a message that says "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set" then reduce the number on the end (1472) by 1 and try again until you do not get the fragmented message.

If however you did not receive the fragmented message then increase the value by 1 and try again until you get the fragmented message.
Look for the largest value that does NOT give you a fragmented error message.
Once you have this value, add 28 to it and that is your MTU value.
e.g. 1472 + 28 = 1500

2. MSS

Your MSS value is the following:
MSS = MTU - 40
so if you found that your MTU is 1500 then your MSS would be:
MSS = 1500 - 40
MSS = 1460

3a. RWIN

This is the difficult one. If you have trouble with this, just use the calculator.
Your RWIN should be a multiple of your MSS.
RWIN = MSS * multiplier
The multplier should always be an even number.
The maximum RWIN value you can use is 65535. If you wish to use a value higher than that you can scale up your answer by a power of 2:
RWIN = MSS * multiplier * 2^n (where n is a whole number)

For example,
RWIN = 1460 * 22 = 32120
RWIN = 1460 * 22 * 2^4 = 513920
That is the format for RWIN.

The optimal value for RWIN can be described like this... RWIN should equal the number of Bytes that can be downloaded in your maximum latency time, plus 10% as a buffer. This value then needs to be rounded up so it is a multiple of your MSS, following the format above.

The latency time is roughly equal to your ping to a server. However, you should always use your maximum ping time - ie the largest ping you have out of all the servers around the world. For most of you this will be around 250 ms.
You can find out your maximum ping by using the ping command on a server far away.

3b. SWIN

This is exactly the same as the RWIN above but it is for your UPSTREAM.
Calculate it using exactly the same numbers but use your upstream data rate in place of the downstream rate.

The optimal value for SWIN can be described like this... SWIN should equal the number of bytes that can be UPLOADED in your maximum latency time, plus 10% as a buffer. This value then needs to be rounded up so it is a multiple of your MSS, following the syntax above.

You can use the calculator to get this value, just put your upstream rate in the "Line Speed" box. The RWIN output can be then be taken as your SWIN.

4. TTL

You can set this to 64 if you do not wish to experiment with it. 64 will be sufficient in all cases.

However, you should be able to set it to 48, or as low as 32 if you can (the worst should be 128).

For example, from myself to my ISP's server is only 18 hops, however from myself to Yahoo's server is 30 hops. Since I have not found a server which is greater than 30 hops away from me, I can set my TTL to 32.

If you set this too low, your packets may be destroyed before they reach a server.
If you set this high (like the default value) then it's not really a big deal, however it is possible that longer delays may result from packetloss.

You can find out how many hops it is to a server by running a traceroute.
To run a traceroute, at the command prompt type:
tracert address
e.g.
tracert aol.com

OK that's all the calculations and information you need to find out. Now I will state some universal optimals and the settings you can derive from the calculations above:

Windows Registry Disassembled a Basic Tutorial

The registry is a hierarchical database that contains virtually all information about your computer's configuration. Under previous version of Windows, those setting where contained in files like config.sys, autoexec.bat, win.ini, system.ini, control.ini and so on. From this you can understand how important the registry is.

The structure of the registry is similar to the ini files structure, but it goes beyond the concept of ini files because it offers a hierarchical structure, similar to the folders and files on hard disk. In fact the procedure to get to the elements of the registry is similar to the way to get to folders and files.

In this section I would be examing the Win95\98 registry only although NT is quite similar.

The Registry Editor

The Registry Editor is a utility by the filename regedit.exe that allows you to see, search, modify and save the registry database of Windows. The Registry Editor doesn't validate the values you are writing: it allows any operation. So you have to pay close attention, because no error message will be shown if you make a wrong operation.

To launch the Registry Editor simply run RegEdit.exe ( under WinNT run RegEdt32.exe with administer privileges).
The registry editor is divided into two sectios in the left one there is a hierarchical structure of the database (the screen looks like Windows Explorer) in the right one there are the values.

The registry is organized into keys and subkeys. Each key contains a value entry , each one has a name, a type or a class and the value itself. The name is a string that identifies the value to the key. The length and the format of the value is dependent on the data type.

As you can see with the Registry Editor, the registry is divided into five principal keys: there is no way to add or delete keys at this level. Only two of these keys are effectively saved on hard disk: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_USERS. The others are jusr branches of the main keys or are dynamically created by Windows.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
This key contains any hardware, applications and services information. Several hardware information is updated automatically while the computer is booting. The data stored in this key is shared with any user. This handle has many subkeys:

Config
Contains configuration data for different hardware configurations.

Enum
This is the device data. For each device in your computer, you can find information such as the device type, the hardware manufacturer, device drivers and the configuration.

Hardware
This key contains a list of serial ports, processors and floating point processors.

Network
Contains network information.

Security
Shows you network security information.

Software
This key contains data about installed software.

System
It contains data that checks which device drivers are used by Windows and how they are configured.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
This key is an alias of the branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes and contains OLE, drag'n'drop, shortcut and file association information.

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
This key is also an alias. It contains a copy of the branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Config, with the current computer configuration.

HKEY_DYN_DATA
Some information stored in the registry changes frequently, so Windows maintains part of the registry in memory instead of on the hard disk. For example it stores PnP information and computer performance. This key has two sub keys

Config Manager
This key contains all hardware information problem codes, with their status. There is also the sub key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum, but written in a different way.
PerfStats
It contains performance data about system and network

HKEY_USERS
This important key contains the sub key .Default and another key for each user that has access to the computer. If there is just one user, only .Default key exists. . Each sub key maintains the preferences of each user, like the desktop colors, the fonts used, and also the settings of many programs. If you open a user subkey you will find five important subkeys:

AppEvent
It contains the path of audio files that Windows plays when some events happen.

Control Panel
Here are the settings defined in the Control Panel. They used to be stored in win.ini and control.ini.

Keyboard Layouts
It contains some advanced code which identifies the actual keyboard disposition how it is set into the Control Panel.

Network
This key stores subkeys that describe current and recent network shortcuts.

RemoteAccess
The settings of Remote Access are stored here.

Software
Contains all software settings. This data was stored in win.ini and private .ini files.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
It is an alias to current user of HKEY_USERS. If your computer is not configured for multi-users usage, it points to the subkey .Default of HKEY_USERS.

Description of .reg file

Here I am assuming that you already have a .reg file on your hard disk and want to know more about how it is structured.Now do not double click the .reg file or it's content will be added to the registry, of course there will be warning message that pops up. Now to view the properties of the .reg file open it in notepad.

To do so first launch notepad by going to Start>Programs>Accessories>Notepad.

Then through the open menu open the .reg file.

Now the thing that differentiates .reg files from other files is the word REGEDIT4. It is found to be the first word in all .reg files. If this word is not there then the registry editor cannot recognize the file to be a .reg file.

Then follows the key declaration which has to be done within square brackets and with the full path.If the key does not exist then it will be created.

After the key declaration you will see a list of values that have to be set in the particular key in the registry.The values look like this:

"value name"=type:value

Value name is in double commas. Type can be absent for string values, dword: for dword values and hex: for binary values. For all other values you have to use the code hex(#): , where # indicate the API code of the type.
So:

"My string" = "string value" is a string
"My dword" = dword:123456789 is a dword
"My binary" = hex:AA,BB,CC is a standard binary
"My other type" = hex(2):AA,BB,00 is an expand string

Important Note: expand string has API code = 2 and extended string has API code = 7.

As you can see, strings are in double quotes, dword is hexadecimal and binary is a sequence of hexadecimal byte pairs, with a comma between each. If you want to add a back slash into a string remember to repeat it two times, so the value "c:\Windows" will be "c:\\Windows".
Before write a new .reg file, make sure you do this else you will get an error message.

Command Line Registry Arguments

FILENAME.REG to merge a .reg file with the registry
/L:SYSTEM to specify the position of SYSTEM.DAT
/R:USER to specify the position of USER.DAT
/e FILENAME.REG [KEY] to export the registry to a file. If the key is specified, the whole branch will be exported.
/c FILENAME.REG to substitute the entire registry with a .reg file
/s to work silently, without prompt information or Warnings.

That wraps up the Windows Registry.

How to eliminate Firefox popups Once and For All

Like you, I love Firefox for many reasons, including popup blocking. So over the last few weeks I have been surprised to see occasional popups.

It turns out that some clever people figured out that you could launch popups from Flash, getting around the Firefox default settings.

Fortunately, you can get around it:

1. Type about:config into the Firefox location bar.
2. Right-click on the page and select New and then Integer.
3. Name it privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins
4. Set the value to 2.

The possible values are:

* 0: Allow all popups from plugins.
* 1: Allow popups, but limit them to dom.popup_maximum.
* 2: Block popups from plugins.
* 3: Block popups from plugins, even on whitelisted sites.

How to send an Anonymous Email ! Comes in handy

Sometimes it is neccasary to send an email anonymously.

There are several web based utilities that allow this, but each one registers the ip info in the headers which allows tracing. They also
will not allow you to use a proxy and utilize their service. This is for security reasons.

My definition of anonymous includes the email addresses appearing as if they have been sent from whatever address you specify as well
as no accurate record of your IP in the headers of the mail that could be traced back to you.

The method that follows supports my definition of anonymous.

Amazingly, all you need to accomplish this is telnet and a smtp server. Allow me to break it down.

Telnet is a software application that connects one machine to another, allowing you to log on to that other machine as a user.

If you don't have telnet, you can easily download it for free from the web - do a search on "telnet" or "download telnet"in any search
engine.

...and just for the sake of being thorough...

What is SMTP?
SMTP stands for "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol"
Basiclly just a protocol for sending e-mail.

Where do you get a SMTP server?
Heres a few links, but as always be aware that these sites may not be here forever or their content may change. Searching for "SMTP servers"
or "SMTP server list" should produce effective results.

Surprise asteroid nearly hits Earth

An asteroid the size of a football field passed extremely close to Earth last week but it remained undetected until days later, according to astronomers.

The space rock missed our planet last week by only 75,000 miles (120,000 km), about one-third the distance to the moon, making the near collision one of the closest ever recorded.

Cruising at 6.2 miles (10 km) per second, the big boulder could have unleashed some major firepower had it struck, according to the NEO (Near Earth Objects) Information Center in Leicester, England.

The destructive force might have been comparable to an asteroid or comet that exploded over Siberia in 1908, which flattened 77 square miles (2,000 square km) of trees, according to the NEO.

But the asteroid, designated 2002 MN, is not in the same league as potential killer rocks measuring more than 0.6 miles (1 km) in diameter, some of which are known to lurk in our space neighborhood between Mars and Venus.

"2002 MN is a lightweight among asteroids and incapable of causing damage on a global scale, such as the object associated with the extinction of the dinosaurs," the NEO center said in a statement.

2002 MN was first spotted on June 17 by scientists with the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project in Socorro, New Mexico, three days after it gave the Earth a close shave.

Nevertheless, the big boulder should not pose a risk for some time.

"This asteroid is not something to worry about," said Donald Yeomans, head of the Near Earth Objects program office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "We have calculated its orbit several decades into the future and it does not threaten Earth."

The closest near collision in recent decades took place in 1994, when asteroid 1994XL1 passed within 65,000 miles (105,000 km) of our planet.

Change Windows XP Themes Without Installing 3rd Party Softwares

Do you hate the way the default windows visual scheme looks? Do you hate the fact that you can only choose from two schemes? Well there are some solutions to fixing this problem. If your lazy and dont care about your RAM usage or other vital stuff - you can install a 3rd party style manager such as Style-XP or some Stardock product. But if you ask me those always up space, RAM, and cpu usage. I'd rather go into display properties on my desktop and change the visual style there. However - Microsoft prevents you from adding any more visual style due to their "uxtheme.dll" file.

Therefore - we must either acquire a hacked version of the file that disables the restriction of adding additional visualization themes, or we can hack it ourselves. If one is good with a hex-editor, then they modify the dll and make the necessary changes, but that takes way too long if you ask me (plus there are different versions of the file for different OS's). What we need is the UX-Multipatcher, which will automatically detect our version of Windows and patch it for us. You can grab it here:

Now after thats done and you reboot - you need some visual themes that look better than what Windows comes with. Here's some recommended sites to grab them from:

So anyway at this point you picked out your selection of themes that you like and have the zip files and your wondering where to put them all. Well its a simple matter of extracting ALL THE FILES found in the zip files to your "c:/windows/resources/themes" directory. After you have finished extracting the files, right click on your desktop then click on "properties." That will open the Display Properties dialog box. Then:

A. For themes with the ".msstyles" file extension: click on the "Appearance" tab then choose your desired theme from the "Windows and buttons" dialog box, then choose which color scheme you prefer from the "color scheme" dialog box (most themes only come with one color, but some come with more). You should see something like in the screenshot here:

Click "apply" then close the display properties dialog box.

B. For themes with the ".theme" file extension, make sure the open "display properties" window is the "Themes" tab (it's the default window, so you should already be looking right at it.) Choose your theme from the "themes" dialog box like below:

".Theme" files often come with icons and wallpaper, but it is not required that you use the icons or wallpaper, so before you click "apply" make sure the wallpaper and icons are the ones you want - for wallpaper click on the "desktop" tab, then choose your wallpaper. For icons, same as the wallpaper, except click on "customize desktop" and then choose your icons like below:

Once that is accomplished, click "apply" then close the display properties dialog box.

C. For themes with both the ".msstyles" and ".theme" extensions, use the ".theme" version if you want to use any included icons, wallpaper, etc. Use the ".msstyles" version to use the "visual style" only without using any of the included icons, wallpaper, etc.

You're done! Yeah, right, wouldn't that be nice? You only wish it was that easy, because I know I do. So keep reading.

There are certain things that must be in place in order for themes to work correctly, so I recommend you double check to make sure everything is good to go before you do any of the above. So go ahead and open the "c:/windows/resources/themes" folder, and follow the below directions:

1. ".Theme" files must be directly within the "c:/windows/resources/themes" folder, and not within individual folders. Check out the screenshot to see what I mean:

If you find any in individual sub-folders, simply move the *.theme* file directly to the "c:/windows/resources/themes" folder.

2. ".Msstyles" files *must* be within their own individual sub-folders within the "c:/windows/resources/themes" folder like in the screenshot below.

For example, the file "generic.msstyles" must be in a sub-folder entitled "generic," "generic1.msstyles" must be in a sub-folder entitled "generic1," etc.

a. If any ".msstyles" files are directly in the "c:/windows/resources/themes" folder, make a *new* sub-folder and name it EXACTLY AS THE ".msstyles" FILE IS NAMED (minus the ".msstyles" extension of course), then move the ".msstyles" file into that sub-folder.

3. After doing the above, you will need to check each individual sub-folder within the "c:/windows/resources/themes" folder, *including* the ones you didn't have to fix, or create yourself. Why? Because:

a. It is essential that the name of the sub-folder match the name of the ".msstyles" file exactly, and caps, lower case, spaces, underscores, etc., ALL count - i.e., the file "generic.msstyles" must be in a folder entitled "generic," "Generic_01.msstyles" must be in a folder entitled "Generic_01," etc. (see screenshot above). If they don't match, you will need to rename the sub-folder that the ".msstyles" file is in so that it matches the file name.

b. Some ".zip" files will extract files into what I call a "sub-sub folder." For example, the file "generic.msstyles" might be in a sub-folder of a sub-folder; i.e., "c:/windows/resources/themes/generic/generic." If this is the case, you will need to move the ".msstyles" file into the first sub-folder, "c:/windows/resources/themes/generic." Delete the "sub-sub" folder after you've moved the ".msstyles" file.

4. Some ".msstyles" themes include what is known as a "shellstyle" ("shellstyle.dll".) "Shellstyle.dll" should be in its own sub-folder entitled "shell" *within* the ".msstyles" theme sub-folder, "c:/windows/resources/themes/generic/shell" like so:

Sometimes, the "shell" sub-folder has its own sub-folders, for example, "c:/windows/resources/themes/generic/shell/normalcolor":

"BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog's legs are articulated like an animal's, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight.

BigDog has an on-board computer that controls locomotion, servos the legs and handles a wide variety of sensors. BigDog's control system manages the dynamics of its behavior to keep it balanced, steer, navigate, and regulate energetics as conditions vary.
